We Review the Alexa Smart Smoke Detector from First Alert (OneLink Safe & Sound)

The OneLink Safe and Sound Smoke detector from First Alert has Alexa built in meaning that it has a both a microphone and a speaker built directly into the smart smoke detector.
The OneLink Safe and Sound with Alexa built in functions as both a Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detector with an abundance of smart features that allow it to do double duty as a built in sound system and nightlight.
With the Alexa smart smoke detector you can stream music directly through the smoke detector using services like Spotfiy or Amazon Music. You can also use the Alexa smart smoke detector like a traditional Alexa device and ask it questions like “Alexa, what’s the weather today?” or use it to control your smart home devices like your Smart Thermostat: https://amzn.to/2Q742X6
It also has a built in LED light that can be provides hundreds of different color hues so that you can customize the lighting in a room. It doesn’t provide enough light to fully illuminate a room but does provide nice mood lighting similar to a color Philips Hue bulb at night in a dark room.
What’s nice about the built in LED light is that it will flash red in an emergency and is a great option for helping alert a person of a fire if they are hearing impaired. Having both visual and audio signals can increase your in home fire response safety.
It’s a nice product that bundles a wide variety of features into a compact package, while the speaker put’s out OK quality sound it’s not going to match the sound quality of a built in speaker or Sonos system. It does provide an unobtrusive way to provide built in Alexa services into a smoke detector without needing an Alexa device sitting on a shelf. It will integrate into your smart home ecosystem just like another Alexa device on the Alexa app.
We would like to see more integrations with the OneLink Alexa smoke detector and other security systems and smart home devices to add additional functionality for the smart Alexa smoke detector. It’s a lot to pay for a Smoke detector but could be good for a long boring hallway you want to add music too or a guest room so your guest can stream their favorite tunes using voice commands.
